Thai Cochrane Network of the Australasian Cochrane Centre

Welcome

We are the Thai Cochrane Network (TCN), a branch of the Australasian Cochrane Centre and part of the Cochrane Collaboration which is an international not-for-profit independent organization, dedicated to making up-to date, accurate information about the effects of healthcare readily available worldwide.

During the past 20 years, there has been a significant development in health care research in Thailand and a number of factors are responsible for this. The World Health Organization, the Ford Foundation, the International Development Research Centre, the British Council and other organizations have helped by providing some research training fellowship in various health fields. These well-trained researchers are now actively conducting health care research.

Clinicians in Thailand started to appreciate the importance of research synthesis more than ten years ago, when the Oxford Database of Perinatal Trials was made available by the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, UK. Appreciation of the importance of research synthesis has increased steadily as evidenced by the number of institutes that are now actively collaborating with the Cochrane Collaboration. These include Chiang Mai University, Chulalongkorn and Mahidol Universities (Siriraj and Ramathibodi hospitals) in Bangkok, and Khon Kaen University. Currently, thirty Cochrane reviews and seventeen protocols have been published by Thai investigators.

There are also many people who would like to prepare and maintain a Cochrane review but do not know how to make initial contact with the Collaboration, how to register the review titles, how to prepare the protocols and how to prepare and maintain the review. Helping more Thai investigators to prepare and maintain Cochrane reviews will create more Thai world experts on the topics their reviews address, and help to build capacity for this kind of research in Thailand.

In 2001, The Thai Cochrane Network (TCN) registered with the Cochrane Collaboration following support from the WHO, HRP, and the UK and Australasian Cochrane Centres.  The Thai Cochrane Network (TCN) is based at Khon Kaen University in the Northeast of Thailand and has the nodes in different parts of Thailand. This group formed the first registered entity for the Collaboration in SE Asia in order to promote the use and generation of research synthesis relevant to health problems in Thailand by working in collaboration with other Cochrane entities.
